Dean Ashton
England Under-21s
Dean Ashton joined Crewe Alexandra’s Academy as a
12-year-old and went on to score an outstanding 74 goals
in 146 appearances before completing a £3 million move
to Norwich City in January 2005. Whilst at Crewe Alexandra,
Ashton was called up to the England Under-21’s scoring
on his debut against The Netherlands on 17th February 2004.
The game ended in a 3-2 win for England at the KC Stadium,
Hull. A month later he scored his second goal away in Sweden
in a 2-2 draw and added goals against Germany and Azerbaijan
in European Championship qualifiers.
After scoring 17 league goals in just 44 starts for Norwich,
he moved on again to West Ham United in January 2006 for a
club record £7 million.
