David Platt

David Platt joined Crewe Alexandra from Manchester United
in January 1985. He went to score 68 times in 148 starts
before joining Aston Villa for £200,000 in 1998. He
received International recognition in November 1989 when
he came on as a substitute against Italy at Wembley. Having
secured a place in Bobby Robson’s World Cup squad for
Italia 90, Platt grabbed his opportunity with both hands
with a dramatic winning goal against Belgium and further
goals against Cameroon and Italy. A £5.5 million move
to Bari later followed and his outstanding form in Serie
A later resulted in moves to Juventus and Sampdoria.
He returned to Arsenal in July 1995 for £4.5 million
before becoming player/manager of Nottingham Forest and managing
the England Under-21 side. His record at International level
saw him score 27 goals in 62 games. He also captained the
side on 19 occasions and represented the country at Euro
1992 and Euro 96.
