Crewe Alexandra Football Club scores with Mayday Network and Football League Trust sustainability drive
DATE: Crewe Alexandra Football Club has teamed up with Business in the Community’s The Prince’s Mayday Network, the Football League Trust and the Environment Agency to showcase the excellent work going on behind the scenes at the club to promote and encourage environmental sustainability.
Crewe Alexandra is just one of 72 clubs from the Coca-Cola Championship, the Coca-Cola League 1 and Coca-Cola League 2 that is working equally hard off the pitch, through the Football League Clubs’ Community Programmes, to reduce our environmental impact and support our local communities in doing so as well. We will be showcasing some of what we do at our next home match on 8th May
Dave Edmundson, General Manager of Football League Trust said “Environment is one of the FLT's core themes. By signing up to the Mayday network and both promoting the key messages together with showcasing good practices agreed in the Community scheme's environmental plan, Football League clubs are closely involved in influencing both their own club and more importantly their communities in highlighting a subject that affects us all.”
The initiatives we run at Crewe Alexandra include: Improved recycling, looking at our carbon footprint re-using natural water supply and saving energy.
The work we have done around these issues has helped us to reduce spend on utilities and to improve community relations. Staff are more aware to save energy when possible.
Ray Walker , Community Manager “Crewe Alexandra Football Club plays a major role in the local community and using that influence to the benefit of others, as well as deliver our business objectives, is a great business ethos to have. We have signed up to the Mayday Network because we recognise the value that is achieved from taking simple steps to reduce our environmental impact, both for the business and the local community. It also gives us a valuable network of other businesses to take inspiration from, and learn about other things we might implement to improve our business operations even further in the future.”
Business in the Community’s Regional Director, Raksha Pattni said: “This is an excellent example of how taking collaborative action on climate change and other environmental and social concerns can work and shows that it is not just limited to big corporate entities. Crewe Alexandra FC is certainly widening the goalposts when it comes to embedding sustainable practices into football and the wider sporting world, and sets a great example for others to follow.”

The Crewe Alexandra Football in the Community Scheme

Coaching Crewe Alexandra Community Project is a vibrant and active community project that aims to support football development and nurture the passion of the region behind Crewe Alexandra.

The Football in the Community Scheme was established in 1988 at the Alexandra Stadium. Since then the scheme has undergone significant change and initiated many new and exciting opportunities within the local community. Now based within a stateof- the-art Football Community Centre in Shavington, the scheme offers many activities including regular fun coaching sessions, holiday activity courses, an extensive outreach programme, girls and ladies development opportunities plus much more. To find out more about your Community Project and how you can GET INVOLVED please read on.

The Community Manager for the Project at the Alexandra Soccer Centre is Ray Walker (UEFA A Coach Educator) who is supported by a dedicated team of qualified FA Community Coaches, Centre staff and Assistants, all of whom aim to provide the best service possible to a community that lives and breathes football. Our high standards have been recognised by the FA as we have been awarded the FA Charter Standard.

“I know how important Football in the Community is to the people of South Cheshire and what a great example it sets to youngsters. Every year is a challenge but we have a firm base here at the Soccer Centre. We have the talent and ability to make it even better. We look forward with you to share that dream.”
